I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. It seems like an excuse to put off something you have no actual intention of sticking to. If you really want to do something, why wait? Why do you need some supposed mystical date change to make it happen?
Every day is a new beginning; so every day you can choose to make a change. Want to give up chocolate? Don’t buy it. Get offered it? Say no. The only thing stopping you from achieving what you want to achieve is you.
This is why I’ve signed up to challenges for the New Year that I am already training for. I have to admit it’s not easy; my body is covered in bruises, and it aches quite a bit of the time, but I genuinely do feel better for it – more awake, healthier, just better.
Some of the challenges I have to admit are a bit daunting. I have a Chase the Sun, sunrise to sunset, cycle challenge in June of between 140 and maybe 160 miles (once we pick our destination).
The furthest I’ve ever cycled in a day is 20 miles and that wasn’t recently. I’m also doing the Coast to Coast Rat Race in Scotland (thankfully with a teammate!) which is on and off road cycling, fell running and kayaking. I run on the road (though it’s hell on my knees), I last kayaked in 2012 and I haven’t done off road cycling in I don’t know how long!
The point is, I want to see if I can and I won’t let myself find out that I can’t. I will put in the effort to train for these events so that I can see what I can achieve when I put my mind and body into it. I’m fed up of being inspired by other people and feeling like they are achieving the impossible that I could never manage. We all have to start somewhere and this is me starting now, today, to get out there and see how well I can do what I will do. (See, WILL do, no get out clause).
I’m lucky because in doing these activities, I’ve found others just as willing to make prats of themselves for the fun of it and they’ll push me along, just as hopefully I’ll help to push them along; they’re much fitter than me though – I’ll likely provide the comedy value. And we’ll all enjoy the great outdoors while haring around it!
I want this blog to act as my conduit for tracking the training, the failings, (I admit, I may give in to chocolate every now and then, and I’m sure I’ll thoroughly enjoy it!) the mishaps, (I am Bambi on ice, there will be mishaps, I’m sure!) and most importantly the triumphs.
If I can set myself this challenge there’s no reason why you can’t too: even if it is giving up your morning coffee and cake!
